A well-prepared sub-base, typically made from compacted MOT Type 1 or crushed stone, provides the strength needed to support vehicles and prevent sinking or rutting over time.

Unlike solid surfaces such as concrete or block paving, gravel does not crack due to frost or ground movement. This flexibility makes it particularly durable in changing weather conditions. Over time, some stones may shift or migrate, especially in high-traffic areas, but this is easily corrected through raking and occasional top-ups rather than costly repairs.

Another factor in lifespan is drainage. Gravel driveways are naturally permeable, allowing water to pass through rather than pooling on the surface. This reduces erosion, freeze-thaw damage, and long-term structural issues that can shorten the lifespan of non-permeable driveways.

With professional installation, proper edging, and a weed membrane, maintenance is minimal and inexpensive. Periodic levelling and adding fresh gravel every few years will keep the driveway looking smart and functioning effectively for decades, making gravel one of the longest-lasting and most economical driveway solutions available.
